This is the eighteenth edition of CrunchX and here are the stories and resources we thought were worth spending the time.

1. Flight School

If you’re a Swift developer like myself and shun those fiddly and inefficient cross-platform ‘solutions’ in favor of efficient native development then you’ll be happy to know that Flight School has opened 3 of its excellent books for free download — “Guide to Swift Strings”, “Guide to Swift Numbers”, and “Guide to Swift Codeable” — all available here. Editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley. Visit the website here:

https://flight.school

2. Uploading to Amazon S3 directly from a web or mobile application

Sometimes a customer, user, or just a friend needs to send you a lot of data — and by a lot, I mean something that’s unfeasible to send by email. If you’re an AWS user (and who isn’t these days?) then here’s the official AWS way of setting up an S3 bucket for serverless upload (with optional authentication — but I’d seriously not do it without!). Written by James Beswick on AWS Compute Blog and editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley. Read the article here:

3. Twitter pays a $150M fine for using two-factor login details to target ads

Twitter fined $150 million for targeting ads by using user phone numbers and email addresses. Social media platforms continue to pose a threat to privacy. Written by Jon Brodkin on ARS Technica and editorial selection by Antony Terence. Read the article here:

5. Failing Forward — How We Grow from Incidents

Spotify engineers don’t just let go of incidents. They also use them for future incidents. To prevent this they also use synthetic tests, and other metrics to monitor incidents. Written by Clint Byrum on Spotify R&D Engineering and editorial selection by Miloš Živković. Read the article here:

6. Designing Netflix

How does Netflix design new features? This story goes into detail on that topic. By details, I mean system design, optimizations, and the nitty-gritty details. Written by Ankit Sirmorya on High Scalability and editorial selection by Miloš Živković. Read the article here:

7. All these Images were generated by Google’s latest Text-to-Image AI

Google has jumped on the text-to-image bandwagon: its latest rendition shows remarkably accurate pictures of what has been scripted into the algorithm. However, one must keep in mind that Google only shows the best results. Most of the pictures are rather unfinished and blurry. This article dives deeper into how specifically Google has been creating these pictures with text commands and what sets them apart from other providers such as DALL-E, for instance. Written by James Vincent on The Verge and editorial selection by Christianlauer. Read the article here:

Data can be a crucial part of investigating financial crimes. However, the data can also create new challenges for investigators and the police. Hence, according to this article, three principles should be given in order to successfully use data for solving financial crimes: bringing all data available together in one place, making the data usable for everyone involved, and exposing content and relationships within the criminal networks in order to identify the bad actors.
